Front splitter, fender flares, and side skirts sit in the stone impact zone, face full sun, and take the brunt of road grime and winter chemicals. The difference between a kit that still looks new at five years and one that looks tired at eighteen months is almost entirely maintenance — not material quality.

Why Large Carbon Panels Need Different Care
Most carbon fiber care advice was written for small parts like mirror caps and trim pieces. Wide body panels are different in three ways:
- Bigger surface area means more visible defects. A single chip is barely noticeable on a mirror cap; on a 1.5-meter front fender flare, it is the first thing you see.
- They sit in the impact zone. The splitter and flares absorb the stone strikes that would normally hit factory bumpers.
- They flex more. Long panels flex during driving, which stresses clear coat adhesion differently than small rigid parts.
The practical consequence: wide body owners need a protection layer and a repair protocol, not just a wash routine.
The Cleaning Protocol
Correct washing is the foundation of carbon care. The goal is never to touch the clear coat with anything that can scratch it.
- Frequency: Every 2-4 weeks for daily drivers; after any off-road or long highway trip immediately.
- Pre-rinse first, always. Loose grit on a dry carbon surface is sandpaper. Pressure-rinse the kit before any contact washing.
- Use pH-neutral shampoo only. Acidic or alkaline cleaners attack clear coat and accelerate yellowing. Never use household detergents.
- Two-bucket method with microfiber mitts. One bucket for clean water, one for rinse. Wash large panels in straight lines, not circles, to avoid micro-marring that shows on glossy black carbon.
- Drying: Soft microfiber towels or a blower. Never let water air-dry — mineral deposits etch the clear coat.
- What to avoid: rotary polishers without experience (they can burn through clear coat on curved panels), abrasive compounds, and any cleaner claiming to “restore” carbon finish.
The Protection Layer Decision: PPF vs. Ceramic
Every wide body customer asks the same question, and the honest answer is that they solve different problems:
Paint protection film (PPF): A physical 6-10 mil urethane layer on the splitter, flares, and skirt leading edges. PPF is the only protection that genuinely stops stone chips and deep scratches. Budget $800-$2,000 to wrap the kit’s impact surfaces. Self-healing films remove light scratches with heat, which matters on panels you cannot easily repaint. This is our strong recommendation for wide body kits, especially on the front splitter and lower flare edges.
Ceramic coating: A hard chemical layer that repels water, dirt, and chemicals, and makes washing dramatically easier. It does not stop stone chips. Budget $500-$1,200 for a full kit coating (DIY kits from $100-$300 if you are confident). Ceramic reduces the frequency of washing and protects against bird droppings and chemical etching — but it is a convenience layer, not an armor layer.
The winning combination: ceramic coating over the entire kit for chemical and water protection, plus PPF on impact zones (splitter, flare leading edges, skirt bottoms) for physical protection. Total cost: $1,300-$3,000 installed. On a $15,000 kit, this is 10-20% spent to protect 100% of the visible investment.
UV and Chemical Hazards
The two silent killers of carbon fiber finishes:
UV exposure. A UV-stabilized clear coat on quality dry carbon is rated for 5+ years of direct sun without yellowing, and typically maintains appearance for 8-10 years. But no clear coat is immortal, and the horizontal surfaces of flares and skirts get the harshest exposure. Garage parking is the single best UV protection available. For outdoor cars, re-coating with a UV-blocking ceramic every 12-18 months meaningfully extends clear coat life.
Road chemicals. Winter road salt, brake dust, and bug remover are all clear coat threats. Salt is the worst — it creeps into edge seams and corrodes the resin interface. After winter driving or coastal exposure, rinse the wheel arches and kit edges thoroughly. Never let bird droppings or bug splatter sit: their acidity etches clear coat within days, not months.
Stone Chips and Scratch Repair
Despite best efforts, wide body kits take hits. Here is the repair hierarchy:
- Light scratches in the clear coat only: Polish out with a fine compound and a machine polisher. Clear coat on quality dry carbon is 50-100 microns thick, giving you 2-3 safe polishing sessions over the kit’s life. Do not polish bare-weave areas — only clear-coated surfaces.
- Small stone chips (1-3mm): Fill with a UV-curing clear coat repair resin, level it, and polish. Doable at home with a repair kit ($20-$60), or $80-$150 per chip at a specialist. Address chips within weeks — exposed weave wicks moisture and can delaminate.
- Chips that reached the fiber (fiber visible): This is structural territory. Take the panel to a carbon fiber specialist. Patching weave requires matching the twill direction, which is why professional repair matters. Expect $200-$500 per panel for a proper repair.
- Crack or delamination: Do not drive on it, do not attempt DIY. Contact the manufacturer — quality kits carry at least a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and documented impact damage is often repairable under warranty terms.
The golden rule: never let a chip become a delamination. Carbon fiber’s vulnerability is its edge — once moisture gets between layers, damage spreads silently. A $100 repair today prevents a $1,000 replacement next year.
Seasonal Care Checklist
- Spring: Post-winter deep clean, inspect all kit edges for salt damage, re-apply ceramic if due.
- Summer: Wash every 2-3 weeks, park shaded when possible, treat bug splatter immediately.
- Autumn: Clean before winter, apply a fresh protection layer, verify PPF edges are sealed.
- Winter: Weekly salt rinses of arches and kit edges, garage or covered parking, avoid automatic car washes with brushes — their bristles are brutal on clear coat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a carbon wide body kit through an automatic car wash?
We strongly advise against brush-based washes — the bristles micro-mar the glossy clear coat, and tunnel chemicals are often aggressive. Touchless washes are acceptable in a pinch. Hand washing remains the gold standard.
How often should I re-coat the kit?
Ceramic coatings: every 12-24 months depending on product grade and outdoor exposure. PPF: inspect edges annually, full replacement every 5-7 years as the film degrades.
Will the carbon fade or yellow over time?
Quality dry carbon with UV-stabilized clear coat will not yellow for 8-10 years. Budget wet carbon or thin clear coats can yellow within 12-18 months — that is a material defect, not a maintenance failure.
Can I polish the bare weave areas?
No. Polish only clear-coated surfaces. Bare or thin-coated weave is easily damaged by compound and will cloud permanently.
